Day 7- Sat 6 Jun: Wertheim to Wurzburg
Estimated km: 45; Actual km: 45; Total km: 238; Ride time: 2h54m; Start time: 9:20am; End time: 1:20pm; Av speed: 14.9 kph
15-33 deg C, forecast - cloudy with a chance of an afternoon thunderstorm with damaging hail; actual weather, fine and sunny. Yep, weather forecasters, they're the same world over.
Although we would have liked to get away early to beat the predicted afternoon storm, brekkie wasn't available until 8am as it was a Saturday. So it was a 9am start for the ride. We were all pretty much on time. However, just as we were about to leave, both Mick and Gunther decided to get punctures! Both were fixed in no time at all and we were soon on our way.
Following
the Main River today would have resulted in a 100+km ride, so we headed inland
after a few km. Whilst it was a much
shorter ride it certainly wasn't easier as this alternate route was quite
hilly. However the lovely scenery of forests, crops, downhills and villages
more than compensated for the uphill bits. One monster downhill completed a
great day, and we ended up back on the Main River.
Despite the hills we arrived at our hotel (Novotel) by 1:20pm. We knew check-in was not until 3pm, but decided to try our luck anyway. Only 2 rooms were available - Ali and Stew's and Yvonne and Gunther's. So, Mick, Kate, Greg and Wendy sat in the foyer still sweaty and smelly and had a diet coke and waited for the rooms. Wendy went back to the reception desk about 2:30pm and as luck would have it, her room was ready now. Poor Mick and Kate had to wait another 30 minutes before they could get their room. Although it was not a long day, it was quite a tough day and we were all a bit tired.
There were
two festivals on in town this night; Wine and African. We decided we might like to eat at the Wine
festival as it looked like the place to be.
However, after experiencing the noise, crowded and uncomfortable
conditions, we decided to retreat back to a cafe/restaurant in a side
street/mall that we'd seen earlier. It
was the Fischer's turn to choose the dinner venue and the restaurant was
completely empty but it was a great choice as the food, (schnitzel (almost as
big as the plate), chips & salad) was perfect when in recovery mode from a
hills ride. The beer/wine/apple cider were all good too. A slow wander home with
full bellies topped off a great day.
