Day 16 - Mon 15 Jun 15: Donauworth to Augsburg
Estimated km: 44; Actual km: 50; Total km: 731; Ride time: 3h14m; Start time: 9am; End time: 2:30pm; Av speed: 15.7 kph
15-22 deg C, cloudy and cool, with the forecast of thunderstorms, but we arrived before any rain.
For breakfast we did an early morning raid on the bakery, which was supposed to be 300m down the main road and ended up being 900m away and tucked in off the main road. We all ready and rolled out just before 9am. Our downhill ride was not quite as bad as the walk last night as we had to negotiate a few sets of stairs to get over the highways and rail tracks.
Apart from missing one sign, which resulted in one extra km (flat thank goodness), it was a fairly easy and pleasant days ride. Mornos was in the town square at Westendorf outside the Town Hall, which just happened to have a bakery/coffee shop on the ground floor. Upon arrival in Augsburg at 1pm we encountered a very busy period with people, cars, trams (the rails can be tricky) and buses all over the shop. However we all survived ok to have lunch sitting in the City Square next to the huge Tourist Info Office.
We were then only a few km from our hotel, which is a
converted hospital (Hotel am alten
Park) which is an innovative place attempting to integrate into the
surrounding residences and businesses, especially the hospital, by conducting a
whole range of activities. The rooms
were very comfy and the hotel was close to the city.
After
a quick shower and change we hit the streets and it wasn't long before we
encountered our recovery food (in case you’ve all forgotten, this is ice-cream!).
Some
light rain put a bit of a dampener on our sightseeing so it was back to the
hotel for a LLD.
Dinner
was Greek (first one for the tour) which was a couple of 100m up the road from
the hotel. We had good food and good house wine; well-chosen Gunther &
Yvonne. As it was still drizzling with rain we didn't stay out too late. Some did however, need dessert and it was a
sundae at McDonalds at the Hauptbahnhof.
